Trouble with AOL Software

Q: My computer keeps slowing down drastically and when I check the task monitor “aolsoftware.exe.” is using all the memory. I uninstalled AOL, but when I search my computer I still find “AOLtpspd.exe” which won’t delete. I need AOL, but would like to know what is going on before I reinstall.

A: Both .exe programs you mention are normally legitimate parts of AOL software. However, there is a chance that the aolsoftware.exe file is infected with a virus. I would suggest the following:

  1. Run a complete anti-virus scan on your PC. If you don’t have any anti-virus software on your PC, or if it is expired, I suggest AVG or Avast!. Both companies have free versions of their anti-virus software that are both quite effective and won’t slow down your pc. (Note: Always uninstall an old Anti-Virus program and reboot your PC before you install a new one.)
  2. Scan of your computer for spyware or malware. I suggest Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition or Spybot – Search & Destroy, both are great free programs. It’s usually okay to have both of these installed on your PC.
  3. If you’re still having trouble you can prevent aolsoftware.exe from starting up. To do this click on Start, then Run… and type MSCONFIG. Click on the tab labeled Startup and look for “aolsoftware.exe” uncheck the box next to it, and click OK. After you reboot your computer you should find that aolsoftware.exe is no longer running on your PC.
