Problems Installing Microsoft Word

by on October 2, 2007

Q: We have a Dell Dimension with Windows XP and it came with Perfect Expert preinstalled. We would much rather use Microsoft Word but when I tried to install Word from my setup disk for my laptop we get an error that says C:\Windows\System32.\AUTOEXE.NT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Is this because the version of Word I am trying to install was made for Windows 98? Is it possible to buy just Word for Windows XP?

A: You should not attempt to use another (possibly older) version of Microsoft Word on your daughter’s desktop. You may be in violation of the License Agreement by installing Word onto another machine. If your daughter is a student with a school email address and proof of enrollment, she can purchase the full version of Microsoft Office for $60. The newest version of Microsoft Office will be fully compatible with Windows XP.
