Q: On trying to set up my win. Xp it kept flashing me the message that it could not copy the file comadmin.dl-. What would be the location of this file and do you know of anyway to get through this hump.

A: 1. Download the Security Update for Windows XP (KB828741) file to your desktop.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.

4. Select to boot up in Safe Mode.

5. Press Enter.

6. Double click the setup file on your desktop.

7. Installation should work without the error message. Once installed then reboot and do not choose safe mode just let the computer boot like normal.

Laptop Keyboard freezes

by on June 9, 2008

Q: My built-in laptop keyboard and touchpad freeze every four seconds. My keyboard misses a letter or two when I’m typing as a result and it’s infuriating. Ever heard of this problem? I’ve run Spyware Doctor and Spybot, as well as AdAware and Spyware Blaster. They say they’ve caught and killed all spyware. No viruses according to AVG. I\ve reinstalled or rolled back the drivers for these devices and no joy. Any ideas?

A: I know that you have run Spyware and Anti-Virus software already. I see that you have tried several different Adaware/Spyware programs so I think that sufficiently picked up everything for you. What I would recommend is trying more than one anti-virus program as there have been a few times where one program has missed a file that another program has picked up. There is a link below to run an online scan which is TrendMicro HouseCall and it successfully found an additional file on my machine that another program did not find. HouseCall will scan also also checks for spyware in addition to viruses.

If the program does not find anything additional then please try to run a software program that checks to see if your computer has been hijacked. This program is called hijackthis.

The last recommendation that I have is to make sure that your drivers are updated.

If you need further assistance please let us know what operating system you are running and what the make and model of your laptop is so that we can further assist you.

Sunrocket VOIP Configuration Problems

by on June 4, 2008

Q: I have this sunrocket like Vonage which I am trying to hook up through the internet so I can make calls over the internet. I also have beklin wirelss g router and am not able to figure out how to set this up correctly.

A: I can certainly agree that it can be confusing. I have Vonage and I am hoping that I never have to disconnect and reconnect. I am going to make this as easy as possible. I looked at Sunrockets equipment and the setup looks identical to the Vonage setup.

1. Make sure that all equipment is turned off.

2. You should have one cable going from the routers internet/wan outlet to the ethernet port on the modem.

3. Connect another cable from a LAN port on the router (any of them between 1 and 4) to the back of the computer (the one on the computer will look like a phone outlet.

4. Plug your power cord into the modem and wait for the modem to power up so that the lights on the front panel are lit.

5. Now take the ethernet plug from the back of the modem and plug it into the LAN port on the back of the gizmo.

6. Now take the cross over cable and plug one end into the modem ethernet port to the WAN port on the back of the gizmo.

7. Next take the phone cord that is connected to your phone and plug the other end into the Phone outlet on the back of the Gizmo.

8. Plug in and boot up your router and wait for the lights on the front panel to come on.

9. Boot up your computer.

I hope that this clears things up for you.

What Domain Suffix Is Better For An Email Address

by on June 2, 2008

Q: What is better for my email? Dot com or Dot ca?

A: There really is no reason that one is better than the other. It all comes down to personal preference.

If you want to promote national pride then certainly .ca. If you want people to know you live and/or work in Canada then certain go with .ca. If you deal with a lot of people who are computer newbies then you might want to go .com since those types of people tend to think the only domain suffix is .com.
