Screen doesn’t work after dropping laptop

by on January 30, 2009

Q: I dropped my IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T42. It fell from my bed onto the floor (about 3 feet). The computer was on, but hibernating. When I first woke the computer from hibernation, everything seemed normal. Then, my screen went blank. I’ve had mixed results since then. Sometimes, I can enter my login password before my screen goes black. Other times, it doesn’t quite get that far. Recently, I got some error beeps — one long plus two short. The hard drive is not making any strange noises. I upgraded my RAM months before I dropped my laptop. Otherwise, the laptop is using all original parts. Can you help, or is my laptop dead?

A: According to your owner’s manual, the beeps suggest a problem with your laptop’s RAM, monitor-related parts, and/or motherboard (including graphics chip).

Try replacing your laptop’s current RAM with the laptop’s original RAM. Consult the 1050 DIMM and 1070 DIMM sections of your owner’s manual for more information. Read the rest of this entry »

Is there any software or company that does VOIP voice blasts or call blasts?

by on January 30, 2009

Q: Does anyone know of a voip service that provides a “voice blast” or “call blast” service. This is where you send a recorded phone message to multiple recipients. I know it sounds horrible like spamming and some may not approve – however I want to reach a clearly defined sector with a FREE offer that will be extremely useful and beneficial for them.

Vonage was offering a thing called “call blast” but this was in alpha and they seem to have withdrawn it now. I am in the UK and have been fruitlessly trying to get through to their “contact center” for the past two weeks. It seems like now they have withdrawn it. Does anyone know of a voip provider who provides such a service in the UK? Or is there any software I can install on my PC that would do a similar thing?

Why a computer won’t read some CD-R discs

by on January 29, 2009

Q: Why won’t my Toshiba Qosmio F10 read a Magnavox CD-R? My computer is about four years old.

A: There are several possible reasons why your computer won’t read the Magnavox CD-R:

Scratches or pits on the Magnavox CD-R could easily prevent your computer’s CD-ROM drive from reading the disc. A newer CD-ROM drive might do a better job of reading the damaged disc. Or, you can use a resurfacing kit to repair the damage. Inexpensive resurfacing kits are available at office supply stores, electronic stores, etc. Read the rest of this entry »

Is it bad to put heat sinks on any if not all the motherboard chips?

Q: Is it bad to put heat sinks on any if not all the motherboard chips?

I ask this because I just got a new MB an I have some Heat Sinks left an I would like to use them for something. Plus I say the motherboard would look a lot better with them on.

How to clean a dirty trackpad

by on January 28, 2009

Q: The cursor on my Dell Inspiron laptop is very erratic. I tried changing mouse settings such as speed and sensitivity, but that didn’t help! Can you diagnose the problem and give me a solution?

A: It sounds to me like your trackpad is dirty. Even if you wash your hands before touching your computer, your hands still transfer lots of oils, dead skin cells, and other contaminants to the surface of your trackpad. The sensors in your trackpad are probably mistaking these contaminants for commands from your fingers.

The first step for cleaning your trackpad is to shutdown your computer; this prevents the cursor from clicking on things in your computer as you clean. Then use a damp paper towel to clean your trackpad. Next, use a dry paper towel to absorb as much of the remaining moisture as possible from the trackpad. Even after using a dry paper towel, some moisture will remain on your trackpad. Since moisture is a kind of contaminant, you must wait about 5 minutes for the remaining wetness to evaporate. What laptop has the best battery life?

by on January 28, 2009

Q: Can someone tell me a general rule of thumb for buying a laptop for long battery life? I want to replace my Dell Inspiron 1525 wih a 15″ screen, with a slightly smaller unit, but it must have good battery life. I get no more then 2 hours out of my current laptop no matter what setting I have. I’ve replaced batteries and that did nothing. I do light business and a lot of web surfing. Is there any brand of laptop that stands out as having exceptional battery life?
