What do I do when the administrator profile wont let me log into Windows Vista?

Q: I have an Acer Aspire T180 running Vista Home Premium (preloaded onto PC , I have no recovery disks). I can no longer log onto my user profile (which is the administrator). I get the message “user profile service failed the logon”. I can log into my husbands profile though. I read on the internet about renaming the sid key in the registry editor but it wont allow me. I backed up all my files to external hard drive and decided to do a recover to factory settings but it wont let me do that either. In the profile list my profile is in back up status where as my husbands is local status. Is that correct?
