What laptop has the best battery life?

by on January 28, 2009

Q: Can someone tell me a general rule of thumb for buying a laptop for long battery life? I want to replace my Dell Inspiron 1525 wih a 15″ screen, with a slightly smaller unit, but it must have good battery life. I get no more then 2 hours out of my current laptop no matter what setting I have. I’ve replaced batteries and that did nothing. I do light business and a lot of web surfing. Is there any brand of laptop that stands out as having exceptional battery life?

Battery life is one of the most important selling points for new laptops. There is no special buzz word you should look for on the system specs.

Your best bet is to just look for the manufacturer’s claimed max battery life, and google around for some reviews for that model to see if it lives up to the hype.

Dell’s Latitude E Series claims a max battery life of 19 hours: http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/latit?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz

    Lenovo’s X200s series claims around 12 hours: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=135A781CA29B4ECB9ADAD8E72CF6FD61

A Tip #16 for you is to try to use your laptop’s wifi sparingly, turn it off when you’re not using it and try to be as close to the wireless access point as you can when you do use it. Running the wireless transmitter in your laptop can use a lot of juice, and when the access point is far away, the laptop needs to use more energy to transmit the signal that far distance.
