Q: If I bought a cable modem for high speed internet and hooked it up to my cable without contacting my ISP would it work?

  1.

You’ll need to contact your ISP with the MAC Address of the new cable modem. The MAC Address is a unique ‘fingerprint’ for your cable modem. Your ISP enter this information into a database to allow that modem access to the Internet. If your ISP don’t have that information, the cable modem won’t be authorized and you won’t have internet access.
