How do I mount a Vista backup file?

by on March 1, 2009

Q: My hardrive crashed a few weeks ago. I recovered a .vhd Vista backup file. How do access the file to recover some of my old info. Vista doesn’t recognize it as a backup. I read lots of stuff about mounting it, but I haven’t figured out how to do it. I’m running Vista Business x64.

If Control Panel => System Maintenance => Backup and Restore Center fails, the only possibilities I can think of are that the backup file was either created in a different edition of Windows Vista and/or the backup files is corrupt. Do you get any sort of error message when trying to access the backup file.

This kind of issue is why I have never trusted backup files, system recovery discs, etc. I always create manual backups of my important files and have a full Windows installation disc on-hand for emergencies.

    Does this help?
