How come I cannot open Microsoft Word or IE without installers opening?

by on May 28, 2009

Q: I have a Compaq laptop just over a year old, OS Vista Home Premium. Recently, after a series of a couple of events, it’s become impossible to open Microsoft Word and my Internet Explorer browser without a series of installers trying to start, all suggesting something’s missing that I need to install using a disc.

There are only two things that led up to this — one, I tried to install Second Life and two, I did a Windows update.

I don’t even know if these are related, but I uninstalled Second Life, and when I could not get the printer to open after many attempts, uninstalled it and tried to download the software from HP to reinstall, but that was unsuccessful.

I am on dialup at home (argh) but can get to free wi-fi spots if I’d need to to get this squared away. I really REALLY need to get at Word and a couple other programs.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

What disk is it asking you to insert?

      HP Product Assistant
      Tray App Disk
      PSSWCORE.msi
      DJ_AIO Software
      Market Research

Also, when I try to open Word 2007, it says there’s a Problem with Shortcut and that “the installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it”

Try going into Add/Remove programs and see if you can find HP Product Assistant, if you can go ahead and uninstall it.

Let me know if that helps.

although when I did a search for it elsewhere, the installer showed up. When I canceled the installer, the Product Assistant opened up.
    Thoughts?

Download Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 and save it to your computer.

Right click on msicuu2.exe and open as administrator, install it, then go to Windows/Program Files/Windows Installer Clean Up/mciuu.exe

Look for HP Product Assistant and remove it!

OK, I got that done. No change, installer still won’t let me open Word. I don’t have a printer installed right now — I’m so lost. Sorry.
