Fixing your video card problems

by on June 18, 2009

Q: I play World of Warcraft. I used to play it quite frequently last year. Once in a while during gameplay the screen would freeze black but then things would resume as normal. This might happen once an hour. When I closed the game or minimized it the error bubble at the bottom on my screen would say “Display driver igfx stopped responding and has recovered”. Each time the screen goes black, that message will be there. So if it happens 5 times you have to close out that message five times.

I had taken a several month break from the game and just resumed yesterday. The freezing/black screen/igfx message is now occurring every 10 seconds. This is making it impossible to play without wishing I had a sledgehammer.

This is all the info I can find on my computer:

Windows Vista Home Premium – Service Pack 1 – 32 bit

Intel cpu – t2250 @ 1.73GHz

display driver mobile intel 945GM express chipset family

dell inspiron e1705

A: The first thing you should do in this situation is try to update your video drive. If that does not work then you will want to go to Dell or Intel and download the latest video drive for your video card. Once you have downloaded the driver then you will want to uninstall your previous drive and reboot. Your video will be messed up and you will have to use the default drive built into windows. From there you can then install your latest drive. Follow the detailed instructions below for these two options.

The first step you should take is to make sure you have the latest drive for your video card. You can do this in Windows Vista by going to the Start Menu (blue circle in lower left) => Control Panel => Check for Updates (under Security) => Change Settings => put checkmarks next to Include recommended updates… and Use Microsoft Update. Then click on the OK button. This will return you to the original update window.

From there you will want to select Check for updates… from the left side of the window. If potential updates are found then click on View available updates. Mark all updates for installation, using checkmarks, then click on Install. Restart your computer after all updates have been installed.

If that fails you will want to go to the Dell Support site and click on the Drivers and Downloads section. On this page you will be able to enter your computer’s Service Tag. This will allow you to download updates, which have been designed specifically for your computer. You should also be able to download the drive from intels website as well.
