# How come I am getting error 508 and 501 with my formulas in OpenOffice?

by matt on September 29, 2009Q: In OpenOffice I am trying to use two formulas and the first one is giving me an error code of 501 and the second is giving me an error code of 508.

=IF(B2=””,””,CONCATENATE(“<a href=”””,A2,SUBSTITUTE($B2,” “,”+”),”””>”,B2,”</a><br>”)

=IF(B2=””,””,CONCATENATE(“”,B2,””)

How can I fix these so that they do not give me errors anymore?

There are two problems with the first one but OpenOffice can only show one error at a time. You actually have a 501 and a 508 error on the first one.

The first thing we need to do is check out the OpenOffice error codes.

You will notice that 501 is “Character in a formula is not valid.” The first problem with the first one is the $ before B2. You need to remove that. Once you remove that you should get a 508 error.

The 508 error is “Missing bracket.” You need to put a ) at the end of each statement. It is important to make sure you always have a closing bracket when you have an open bracket so always make sure to count open brackets and close brackets and make sure they add up if you ever have any issues.

So the two correct functions would be

=IF(B2=””,””,CONCATENATE(”<a href=”””,A2,SUBSTITUTE($B2,” “,”+”),”””>”,B2,”

”))

=IF(B2=””,””,CONCATENATE(””,B2,””))
