How can I reset my password on my laptop?

by on October 17, 2009

Q: My laptop doesn’t remember any passwords. Even with the ? hint. I cannot access it. I tried to go into safe mode but it asks for a password there too. How can I bypass it and reset a new password?

I’m guessing this is the windows login password. Check the related answers above for a solution. If you don’t see it there, let me know what version of windows you’re running.

I am running windows xp on a laptop. I don’t understand why it doesn’t acknowledge a password. I tried to set it up to not ask for a password since my husband is usually the only one using it. I have a suspicion there might be a virus or something that caused it. Is there a way to make it acknowledge the password again? I have tried every line from restarting in F8 but they all ask for a password too. I don’t want to reload windows as I do not have the disc. Where would I even get the disc?

As far as I know these are your options:

1 – Get a XP install disk from either a friend or the laptop manufacturer and follow these instructions: http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=305

2 – Try the pay solution mentioned in the above article: http://windowspasswordforgot.com/

3 – Some people have been able to use this (free): http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/

4 – Take the computer to a local computer shop
