How come I cannot transfer video to my computer from my dv camcorder using USB?

by on November 5, 2009

Q: Using Windows XP, Windows movie maker version 5.1 does not recognize my Canon ZR200 mini dv camcorder using USB to transfer dv tape to the computer. The capture from video device does not work either in Movie Maker. Any suggestions other than using fire wire. I have purchased a cable but have no port for this option.

Please see http://www.askageek.com/2007/12/20/transfer-video-from-a-canon-zr200-to-a-computer/. You will find a full explanation of what you need to do but the short answer is you cannot transfer video via USB. You will have to install a FireWire card into your computer. The good news is you can find FireWire cards for as low as $8.00.
