ATX motherboard power connector

by on November 21, 2009

Q: I am looking at a power supply for my computer but I am not sure it has the correct power connector. How do I figure out if a power supply has the correct connector for my ATX motherboard?

A: ATX motherboards and power supplies are based on a 24-pin connector which is really just a 20 pin connector and a 4 pin connector. You can see a good example over at wikipedia. The left most cable is the 20 pin and the one directly to the right of that is the 4 pin. Almost all power supplies these days are ATX but it is always good to double check before spending your hard earned cash.
