How do I do Internet connection sharing between Windows 7 and Windows XP?

by on December 13, 2009

Q: I have a new HP Pavillion DV7-3060US laptop with Windows 7 OS. I have another laptop which is a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP OS. I am trying to learn how to use the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) function I have heard a bout. I have no clue how it is done. Can you help me set that up? My HP computer is connected to the Internet via LAN. I have no router and it is not connected through the phone line.

I would honestly suggest you just get a wireless router so you don’t have to have your computer on all the time for the laptops to be connected to the internet. You are probably looking at around $50.00 for the wireless router, or less if you find one on sale.

To actually do the Internet connection sharing is as simple as going into the networking control panel and turning on sharing for the device. You can follow the instructions at http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-networking/1037-ad-hoc-internet-connection-sharing.html

Ok. thanks. I’ll try that first. If no success then I will buy the router. Thanks Matt.
