How come I cannot access Windows Update after my last Windows Update failed?

by on January 25, 2010

Q: When I tried to download the last MS upgrade for my Windows Vista SP2, it failed. Since that time I have not been able to access windows update. (When I try to do a manual upgrade it says that the update is not for my system–have doubled checked the download info and it says for Vista SP2) MS tech support said that I would have to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Vista to fix the problem. Anybody have any other suggestions or run into this problem?

What error messages do you get when you try to do an automatic update?

    The error codes are:

    80070005, 80070002 and 8024000C

I even went back to a known good restore point and it doens’t make any difference. I have checked for both viruses and malware using my AV program and Malwarebytes

In that case I agree with Microsoft’s suggestion. That is your best path to getting things cleared up and running correctly.

I have been thinking of upgrading the laptop to Windows 7–would that be a better option then reformating my hard drive?

If you want to go to Windows 7, I’d still suggest you wipe the drive first and go with a fresh load. You’ll have much better results.
