Can I put a hard drive from a dead computer in my new computer as a slave?
by 1Bearcat2 on January 30, 2010Q: I recently purchased a new PC due to the failure of the Motherboard on my previous PC. Can I ‘slave’ the old PC’s hard drive to the new PC and if I can will the programs I loaded on that old hard drive be operational? My Old PC was a HP Media Center with Windows XP and my new PC is a Compaq Prisario with Windows 7 Home Addition.

You’ll be able to copy files over like music and photos, however most installed software will not work. This is because most software needs to write some information to the operating system’s registry to work correctly. You’ll need to reinstall the programs on the new pc for them to function correctly.
