Q: I am running Windows XP and want to do a full backup. When I insert a floppy diskette into my A drive the computer does not respond. How come I cannot get my floppy drive to respond when diskettes are inserted?

What backup software are you trying to use?

Are you planning on backing up your entire system to floppy disks or burning the backups to CD/DVD?

I suggest either trying a floppy drive on a different PC to get the data off your 3.5″ diskettes. You can also try using a 3.5″ diskette drive cleaner to see if that helps. If none of this works there isn’t much else I can suggest, I’ve seen lots of people loose important data to corrupt 3.5″ diskettes.

Avoid keeping data on 3.5″ diskettes. I strongly suggest discontinuing use them completely. In the future, use a USB thumb drive to move files around, and always have more than one copy of important data.
