Is there such thing as binary code with nine digits per letter?

Q: Is there such thing as binary code with nine digits per letter like 000111000, 001000100, or 010000010?

    In most cases binary code would be 8, 16, 32, or 64-bit. I have never seen anything that was 9-bit. It would certainly be out of the ordinary.
