Q: Why can I not buy a song from iTunes? I have iTunes on this computer and have bought songs in the past. Now I get “make sure your network connection is active and try again.”

Run iTunes Help>>Run Diagnostics…>Network Connectivity test..

Click help next to any issues, and see if you can resolve the problem, otherwise post the results below if you wish.

    ctive Connection: LAN Connection
    Connected: Yes
    Online: Yes
    Using Modem: No
    Using LAN: Yes
    Using Proxy: No
    SSL 3.0 Support: Enabled
    TLS 1.0 Support: Enabled

    Firewall Information

    This is what I get:

    Windows Firewall is on.
iTunes is enabled in Windows Firewall.

Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to iTunes Store was successful.
Secure connection attempt to iTunes Store was successful.

And I still cannot buy a tune. Is there something to do with a new virus protection? I think all the other programs are up to date

Any other ideas as to what to try to make sure I have an active network connection? I am online and on the iTunes website, but get the error message when I try to buy a tune. Good grief, it will even let me hear the sample.

    1) What is the ‘new virus protection’ you mentioned?
    2) What version of iTunes are you running? Help>About Itunes will show the version number.

    1) Microsoft Security Essentials (my son-in-law changed this out so I am confident that it was done correctly. I just don’t know too much about it.)

    2)Running iTunes (HP)

I also have 2 users on this computer. The iTunes is on the one without administrative privileges, but it has been set up this way for a long time and I have bought tunes successfully before with this set up.

The problem is your iTunes is very very out of date. The current version is 9.0.3 or so. Get the latest version from

Thanks, I got the lastest version of iTunes and it is now working fabulously. I had to first update iTunes on the administrator user and then I could get it on the me user. That is why this got so out of date as I did not do that extra step to get the current version. It would have been more descriptive for me it the error message had said “get the latest version” instead of check your network connection. Thanks for all you help.

Great, make sure you keep all your software up to date for best results!
