Install using a DVD on a system with only a CD player

by on February 28, 2010

Q: How do I reinstall the operating system on an old Compaq Presario SM1103WM desktop computer with a CD reader when all that I have are DVD operating system disks?

A: You cannot install software on a DVD using a CD player, it is just not possible. You do, however, have a few options. If you feel comfortable you can take the DVD player out of one of your other computers and install it in this computer so you can get your software installed. After you do the install you can then put your DVD player back in the computer it came from.

If you do not feel comfortable taking your computers apart then the best idea would be to use an external DVD player. This would make it so you don’t have to do anything except hook up a USB DVD player to your computer.

If you feel you will need a DVD player in the computer down the road and you don’t like the idea of an external DVD player then you can buy an internal DVD drive for the computer. You will just have to make sure that you get the correct interface for your computer though (SATA or IDE).

We hope that one of these options helps you get your computer back up and running the way you need it!
