Windows XP for Dell cannot be installed on a Compaq

by on March 3, 2010

Q: I have a Compaq laptop that came with Windows Vista installed. I have my discs for Windows XP that came with my Dell. Can I install Windows XP from the the Dell discs onto my Compaq laptop and dump Vista?

A: The simple answer is no. Most OEM restore discs will only work with that manufacturers computer and in some cases only with certain models of the computer. The license key is usually tied to the manufacturer and restore disc as well and by this I mean you will not be able to borrow a friends full version of Windows XP and use the license key from your Dell to get it installed either.

If you were, some how, able to get it installed we would suggest that it is not the best idea. Windows XP is in the process of getting phased out and that means security updates will stop coming out for it shortly. So while you might be more comfortable with Windows XP than you are with Windows 7 you will be much better off, in the long run, sticking with Windows 7 than rolling back to Windows XP.

If there are certain things you don’t like about Windows 7 then you should submit questions to us asking how you can make it work the way you want. Windows 7 seems to be configurable to a point that you should be able to make it work in a manner that you find acceptable.
