How come part of my screen does not work after dropping my laptop?

by on March 21, 2010

Q: I tripped over my power cord and my laptop fell off my ottoman. The brunt of the damage was taken directly at the top edge of the screen. The laptop works fine (battery may be running a little hot, but that’s probably just HP’s problem), but there is about a 2.5 inch wide vertical bar near the center of the screen that doesn’t work correctly. The first 1.5″ is black and white pinstripe, the next 0.5″ is solid black, the next 0.5″ is multicolored vertical lines that seem to be constantly flickering between colors. Does this sound like a connector problem or a broken area of the display?

  1.

Could be either, verify the connector is okay and then you’ll know for sure. Keep in mind opening up the laptop will void your warranty if you still had one, so consider backing up all your important data before you start taking things apart.
