Increase your computers RAM

Q: How can I increase the amount of RAM in my computer?

A: Increasing the amount of RAM in your computer is usually the most economical way to increase the performance of your computer. Along with being the most economical way to increase the performance of your computer it is also the easiest do it yourself way of increasing the performance of your computer as well.

The first thing I would suggest doing is going to a site like Crucial.com. Sites like this usually have little programs that can be installed on your computer that will gather the information about your computer and tell the site what kind of RAM you need. If you know all the information about your computer then you might not need this but most people don’t know everything about their computer so using the tools built into Crucial.com is a great first step.

The nice thing about the Crucial.com site is that it will automatically determine not only what kind of RAM you need but it will also determine if you need to replace your existing RAM. What I mean by this is in a laptop, for example, your RAM slots might all be used up so you might have to take out your RAM and install new RAM to go from say 1GB to 2GB. So this would mean you would have to buy 2GB of RAM even though you already 1GB of RAM in your laptop.

Now that you have the tool to tell you what you need to do to get to the amount of RAM you want the next step is buying the RAM. Once you receive the RAM in the mail it should include some information on how to install it. If it does not then it is time to search for the manual for your computer. The best way to find the manual for your computer is to go the manufacturers website, then go to support, and then type in the model number for your computer.

Once you have the manual find the page on upgrading RAM. This should show you exactly what you need to do to remove the old RAM, if that is required, and to install the new RAM. You will want to make sure you do not do this on the carpet because that could lead to an electrical charge destroying your computer. Do it on a table on a tile floor or wooden floor. This will help protect your computer components from an electrical shock.

That is about it. Get the RAM. Find your manual. Install the RAM. Then boot up your computer and enjoy the improved speed due to your computer not having to use the hard drive for extra memory while running multiple applications or applications that use a lot of RAM.
