What motherboard should we buy for gaming?

by on May 8, 2010

Q: My son and I are building our own gaming computer. We have a Fractal Design R2 case with a 650 watt PSU. We need some advice on the best motherboard to get for our gaming purposes. We have around £150 to spend. We intend to use an Nvidia graphics card so any board should be compatible.

Motherboard’s aren’t a major source of system performance, so I would suggest you try to settle on the CPU you want to buy first, and let that be the first major deciding factor. CPUs will normally only work with one or two motherboard chipsets. So once you know your CPU you can narrow the field down a lot.

There are probably no less than ten great choices once you know what chipset you’re shopping for, so shop around for a good deal.
