How come files that I copied onto my external hard drive are not there anymore?

Q: I have an external hard drive (samsung story, 1TB) that i used to back up around 150 gigs of data before I formatted my computer (I was using ubuntu to transfer these files) and now that I’m up and running again and trying to access these files, they aren’t there. everything put on the drive before that is visible and the used space on the drive’s properties is 150 gigs too high for whats visible, but the folder that the data was stored in says nothing’s in it. Is there any way to read this data or discover what’s wrong with the hard drive or the data?
