How come my Windows Media Center Edition PC will not shut down via start turn off?

by on May 20, 2010

Q: My PC with Windows Media Center Edition will not shut down via start > turn off. I have not added anything new to the PC and in fact I have tried to get rid of the bloatware crap that came with it. It was sold to me as having 1GB when it actually has 927MB or some odd number. You live and learn when you buy from any old computer store. Anyway, what is causing this and how can I fix it?

You will want to read http://www.askageek.com/2010/03/25/hard-drive-sizes-are-not-the-same-as-disk-space/ for information on why 1GB is not actually 1GB as it is similar to the answer on hard drive space but hopefully someone else can help with why it wont shut down.

Uninstall any anti-virus/anti-spyware software installed, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials: http://bit.ly/btJ6Jy

Let it update and run a complete system scan.

Then download and install CCleaner: http://bit.ly/aECGx8 (aka Crap Cleaner) use that to get rid of some more garbage on the computer.

If none of this helps I’d suggest going for a Windows Reinstall. Since the system came pre-loaded with who-knows-what it’s difficult to diagnose the problem. Generally it can be caused by some random program, so I’d suggest uninstalling anything you’re not using, and making sure all your drivers and Windows is fully up to date (via Windows Update).
