Is it worth adding more RAM memory to my old Dell Dimension 2400 computer?

Q: Is it worth adding more RAM memory to my old Dell Dimension 2400 computer (Celeron dual core 2.40 GHz)?

I gave my kids my old computer. Now that they are older and wanting to watch a lot of youtube videos and play the facebook games the performance difference with the pentium processors and this celeron is very noticeable. Most people say to just add more RAM. Is this true if that is the only things my kids will be using the computer for?

The system is about 6+ years old, and a RAM upgrade to its maximum of 2Gigs will cost you around $95. (also, the Celeron you refer to is a single core cpu)

A new computer will probably run you around $500 – $600. The processor will probably be ~10x as fast, and you’ll have the latest version of windows.

The RAM will certainly make an improvement, but it will be a stopgap measure to buy a little time until the computer gets replaced. The RAM you purchased for the old computer won’t work in a new one so that $95 may have been better spent going toward the new PC.

Given the age of the PC, you would be best off just replacing it.
