How can I monitor bandwidth usage on our Internet connection?

by on May 29, 2010

Q: I have 4 computers, used by me, my dad, and my sisters. Dad just used 20GB of internet in just 1 day, and it was in PEAK so my internet is slowed.

My dad refuses to believe that it was him even though it was him. I need firstly prove to him with IP address and monitor future bandwidths so we don’t get capped.

For best results, you’ll want to monitor bandwidth usage from the router.

Check your router’s manual (download from manufacturer’s website if needed) to see if it supports this type of logging out of the box.

If it doesn’t, you may want to consider replacing the firmware running on the router with either Tomato or DD-WRT:

    http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato

You’ll need to check their websites to see if your router is compatible, and follow the instructions carefully there if you choose to go that route.
