Files in windows normally have an extension like .doc .txt .avi at the end of the file name. Windows maintains a list of these extensions and what programs each file should be opened by. For example it might know to open a .txt file with Notepad.

When a file doesn’t have an extension at the end of it (if it was just named “notes” instead of “notes.txt”, then windows won’t be able to remember how to open it.

If you’re having this problem with all files, you can try this fix from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555076#top
