Can I edit Excel files on my desktop from my netbook if I do not have Excel on my netbook?
by mrcarrion2 on June 16, 2010Q: I have an WiFi network in my apt, and a desktop PC (dell studio hybrid) holding most of my files and software (like ms office). Can I use my netbook to access excel work books via ms excel – on my desktop – to open and manipulate (edit/save) files? I do not have Excel installed on the netbook, and I need to be able to access/edit files on my decktop using excel.
Should i use a remote SW or can i install excel to my netbook somehow (without an exterior cd drive)?
Are there other options?

You have a bunch of options, but I think these are your best ones:
1. If you have the Install CD available, copy the contents of the disk to a USB stick, plug that in your netbook and run the installer.
2. Move your excel docs to the cloud. Google Docs and Office Web Apps allow you to store your documents on-line and edit them in the browser. You can then access your documents away from your home network too.

You can also use Open Office. It will install on your computer locally and run just as Microsoft Excel would. It is Open Source and is free. You can find it at http://www.openoffice.org
