How come I cannot get my computer to match the optimal resolution of my monitor?

Q: I just bought a new Samsung wide screen E1920 monitor. The color resolution is optimal at 1360 X 768. My color resolution is at the highest at 1024 X 768. How do I change it? I have tried unchecking the box – hide modes this monitor cannot display and get larger numbers but not this exact setting.

    Things to try:

    1. Update your video card drivers to the latest version
    2. Try using different connection methods (VGA instead of DVI or vice-versa).
