How do you transfer mp3 files to a 4 year old iPod?

Q: how do i transfer and listen to mp3 music to a 4 yr old 30gb ipod?
I agreed to let my 9yr old daughter use it a bit for music.
i have had the ipod for 3-4 years but used it only as a memory device like a DOK.
i’ve tried conversion software mp3 2 ipod but standalone i can’t find or play any of the files on the ipod.
how do i use the ipod as an mp3 player. its an older model but it can play videos as well?
