How come my Internet connection does not work after dropping my laptop?
by mss on September 30, 2010Q: I dropped my laptop and now my internet connection doesn’t work. The computer turns on and my other programs like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint work but only the internet wont work. I have an HP Acer.
How do you connect to the internet on the laptop, through wireless or a wired connection? If it is wireless you may have damaged the internal wireless NIC. Can you send me the exact brand/model number of the computer? I may be able to provide you with instructions on how to reseat the NIC or replace it.

Also, Is the computer still under warranty?

No, my laptop is not under warranty. I got it three years ago but with a two year warranty. My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv2000. Only the wireless connection doesnt work. If I connect the cable from the modem to the laptop it works, but it doesnt work anywhere else. Thanks for all your help.

Thank you for the info….. If you open device manager ( you can follow these instructions if your unsure how to) http://www.laplink.com/support/kb/article.asp?ID=359
and expand “network adapters” can you tell me what is listed there and if there are any question marks or red “X”‘s that you see listed? Also is there a switch on the external case of the laptop that turns your wireless on and off?

In my device manager, it says
-Broadcom802.11b/g WLAN
-Marvell Yukon 88E8039PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
There are no question marks or rec “x” s
and I do have a switch on my laptop to turn my wireless on and off and it’s turned on.
