How come I can ping IP addresses on the local network but cannot resolve host names?

Q: You are resolving issues on a colleague computer and discover that you can no longer access the company Intranet. You notice that you can successfully PING the IP address of the system that hosts the company Intranet, however; you cannot PING the host name. Please describe the nature of the problem.

    hostnames are handled by DNS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System
