How do on demand movies work?

by on November 11, 2010

Q: How does several persons watch the same movie from a technical stand point such as on demand.

How is the signal split and are able to start at the same time, what are the devices used to do this?

Digital cable boxes now a days mostly all work over IP with your cable provider. Video On Demand works in the same way as the internet works, To simplify this there is a server that your digital cable box is connected to. When you order a movie the “file” (movie) is then opened and streamed to your digital cable box. The way that this gets to only your cable box and no one elses is because it sends the movie to your IP address which no one else on that network has. There are a lot more other technicalities to this but this is the basics.
