How do I move data from my C hard drive to an external hard drive?
by drmac on December 2, 2010Q: I have a c drive that is 99 % full and an add on G drive–external. How can I take 30 % of what is on the C drive and move it to the G drive so the computer will operate more quickly?

First off, here is a quick explanation of the basics of moving files around in Windows http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Move-and-copy-files-using-drag-and-drop
With that out of the way, the only files you can safely move are files like music & video that you access directly, if you move installed programs to the new drive by dragging and dropping, the programs will have trouble working.
If you don’t have a lot of downloaded material, and it’s just a lot of installed programs taking up most of the space, you’ll need to uninstall the programs, and then reinstall them to the G drive.
