How come I get an error saying “generic volume device cannot be stopped” when trying to eject my external hard drive?
by mrguy2039 on May 3, 2011Q: I use an external hard drive to store all my music. However, on one of my laptops (and sometimes our main computer), it won’t allow me to eject it, because “generic volume device cannot be stopped”… any suggestions?

Are any programs running from the drive? Does the drive have an autorun feature? Backup software?
You can always try EjectUSB if all else fails.
