How do I get my Dell monitor to work with my Gateway desktop and Gateway monitor?

by on November 24, 2012

Q: How can I get a dell monitor to work simultaneously with my gateway desktop? Please note that my desktop computer and monitor are both gateway products and are running XP. I want to add the dell monitor to widen my desktop (duel monitors).

Plug the monitor into your laptop.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
On the Settings tab, click Identify to display a large number on each of your monitors. This shows which monitor corresponds with each icon.
Click the monitor icons and drag them to positions that represent how you want to move items from one monitor to another, and then click OK or Apply to view changes.

WOW. Okay. I’ve done all that. However I must be running an older system because appearance and themes are within ‘Display,’ not the other way around. Also, ‘Identify’ does not appear within the settings tab; however, it does show the functioning monitor but no way to add or change. Any suggestions?

Do both of your monitors get a signal, or no?

My Gateway desktop does not recognize the extra monitor; however, my daughter’s Dell desktop does and so does my Dell laptop.Short of upgrading my Gateway desktop (which I really can’t afford to do at this time), I was hoping there was something I could purchase that would enable the Gateway to recognize the Dell. Hopefully I’ve answered your question or at least given you enough information to better understand what’s happening. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Your gateway desktop should work find with a monitor made from any company. There isn’t any type of brand requirements.

Now, I need to understand a little more about your gateway desktop. I’m assuming there are two VGA ports on the back of the gateway desktop, correct?

Does your existing gateway monitor work regardless of which of these two VGA ports it is hooked into? Or does it only work with one of them?

The VGA ports are not next to each other the one in which the Gateway monitor has always been hooked up to is on the bottom horizontally and the other is located above vertically.

I’m going to switch them now and get back to you.

    Thank you so much.
