What drives should I buy for my RAID enclosure?

by on February 16, 2013

Q: I am buying a raid enclosure that will house 4 internal hard drives, and i am looking for advice on which drives to buy. western digital vs. seagate, etc. Also, are 4TB drives more or less reliable than 3 TB? I remember reading some skepticism about the 4 TB drives when they were newly released. Thanks!

I’ve owned countless Seagate and Western Digital drives over the years, they both make great products.

Take a look at review on Amazon and Newegg, check for drives with longer warranties than others, and divide the price over the capacity to see how much you’re paying per TB.

Drives fail, it’s just a question of when and sometimes a bad drive gets built. It’s just the way it is.

Just remember that RAID is not a backup solution.
