Best PDA without a phone
by robert on January 26, 2009Q: I was wondering if you could recommend a PDA that does NOT have a phone or camera.
It must fulfill the following requirements
Windows CE: Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 or Microsoft Pocket PC 2000 (ARM/X-SCALE only) 2002, 2003, 2003 SE; Palm OS 3.5 or higher. If there’s not a PDA you can recommend, could you explain what these different requirements mean? I know there are companies like Palm and HP. Can Palm work with both Palm and HP or just a Palm?
A: Modern devices from BlackBerry and Palm (including the cool-looking Palm Pre) all have phones built into them. And because of poor security and even worse usability, I cannot recommend Windows Mobile PDAs at this time.
Therefore, I suggest that you consider purchasing an Apple iPod Touch. It has the same PDA-like functionality as Apple’s iPhone, but without features you may want to avoid: phone, Bluetooth, GPS, and camera. The iPod Touch can play music, display photos, and play videos. It currently comes with your choice of storage capacity: 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB. The 8 GB iPod Touch can hold thousands upon thousands of emails, contacts, documents, etc. But if you have a large collection of multimedia files, consider purchasing either the 16 GB or 32 GB version. Tip: From time-to-time, Apple will release software updates for your iPod Touch. Some of these updates will be free, while others will cost money.
